Economics and Standardized Tests in Michigan

According to Jan Ellis, a communications specialist with the Michigan Department of Education, schools with children that are of a higher economic status, the higher their test scores will be.

After hearing this and researching, I found some truth to this. Kalamazoo, where I’m from, is not a wealthy city. Portage, a suburb of Kalamazoo has a higher economic status that can be seen just driving through it.

I found that Portage Northern and Portage Central, the two high schools in that area, scored substantially higher on the Michigan Merit Exam than Kalamazoo Loy Norrix and Kalamazoo Central high schools.

The overall test scores from both the MEAP and MME can be found at: www.michigan.gov/mde

They will be under the assessments and accountability tab on the left-hand side.
