At 7 p.m. every Wednesday the University Activities Board members host an event called Stretch Away Your Stress. The event switches between yoga and Zumba, a type of Latin dance. This event has become so popular that it has been moved to Gold Room B in the Union
Zumba is a type of aerobic exercise originating in Columbia in the 1990s. In Aug. 2001 Alberto Perlman founded a company called Zumba Fitness. By 2008 Zumba Fitness had over 20,000 instructors and sold 3.5 million DVDs. There are many other companies that have begun giving Zumba lessons as well.
In order to help students get rid of their stress the UAB has begun to provide Zumba classes. Jenny Niergarth, a freshmen marketing major, said, “It was a lot of fun doing all of the Latin choreography to popular songs.”
In addition to Zumba being fun, Niergarth also says it is a great workout and that she could really feel it the next day.
